Tips for Packing Like a Professional

Packing is your move's most important step. Discover professional techniques to protect each item.

Tips for Packing Like a Professional
1

Essential Materials for Successful Packing

Before starting, gather all necessary materials: boxes in various sizes (small for heavy items like books, large for light, bulky items), bubble wrap, kraft paper, strong packing tape, markers, and scissors.

Also get compression bags for textiles, plastic wrap for securing drawers, and moving blankets for furniture. Newspaper can fill voids and absorb impact in boxes.

2

The Room-by-Room Method

The golden rule: never mix contents from two rooms in one box. This method simplifies unpacking tremendously.

Start with rarely-used rooms: office, guest bedroom, garage. End with kitchen and bathroom that you use until the last moment. Label every box on top and sides with room name and contents.

3

Protecting Fragile Items: Proven Techniques

For dishes, place them vertically like records with paper between pieces—this protects better than stacking. Stack glasses vertically in wrapped groups.

For frames and mirrors, create protection sandwiches: cardboard, bubble wrap, item, bubble wrap, cardboard. Mark "FRAGILE" on every side. For lamps, remove shades and pack separately in tissue paper.

4

Packing Your Kitchen Successfully

The kitchen is usually the trickiest room. Start with rarely-used items: serving dishes, specialty items, unusual appliances.

Stack pots and pans with paper between to prevent scratches. Wrap knives in a rolled paper towel secured with tape. Group spices in one box with a plastic liner as backup. Prepare separate containers for food items.

5

Optimizing Box Loading

No box should weigh more than 20-25 kg. Heavy items go in small boxes, light items in large ones. Place heavier items at the bottom for stability.

Fill empty spaces with crumpled paper, socks, or towels so contents don't shift during transport. A well-packed box feels firm when closed, neither flat nor overstuffed. Reinforce bottoms with double tape layers.

6

Packing Mistakes to Absolutely Avoid

Underestimating box quantity is error number one. Always plan 10-15% extra. Second: forgetting to label—unlabeled boxes always end up in the wrong room.

Don't overload boxes beyond comfortable lifting. Avoid plastic bags for transport—they tear easily and don't protect. Never pack prohibited items: flammable products, exposed lithium batteries, perishables.
