Moving from a Walk-Up Apartment in Tunis: Practical Guide

Narrow staircase, tight landing, 4th floor downtown: here's how to organize a move without an elevator while limiting damage, fatigue, and cost.

Moving from a Walk-Up Apartment in Tunis: Practical Guide
1

Why This Case Is So Common in Tunisia

A large share of Tunisia's housing stock, particularly in the historic centers of Tunis, Sousse, Bizerte, or Sfax, predates the 1990s and lacks elevators. Walk-up buildings of 4-5 floors are widespread in neighborhoods like Passage, Lafayette, Bab Bhar, or the Medina.

This context imposes specific logistics. Manual carrying extends moving duration, increases damage and injury risk, and mechanically raises the price. Anticipating this constraint well reduces these impacts and guarantees a smooth operation.

2

Assessing Constraints Before the Day

Start by measuring the actual width of your staircase and landings. A spiral staircase or tight turns can block a sofa, a king-size mattress, or a non-disassemblable wardrobe. Also measure stairwell ceiling height to avoid surprises.

Identify bulky furniture and decide what will be disassembled. A wardrobe, a fixed-base double bed, a corner desk, or an American-style fridge almost always need disassembly. Note on a plan what must be taken apart, who handles it, and how long it takes.

3

The Furniture Lift Solution: When and Why

A furniture lift is an external elevator that hoists items through a window or balcony. It's the safest and fastest solution for 3rd floor and above. Expect 150-400 TND per half-day depending on city and height. It's a worthwhile investment that cuts carrying time three to four times and eliminates nearly all damage risk.

To install a lift, verify the street is wide enough, parking is allowed or a municipal permit can be obtained, and the destination window or balcony is clear. Not all medina streets allow installation: your provider must validate feasibility during the technical visit.

4

Packing Well for Manual Carrying

If a lift isn't possible, packing becomes critical. Limit each box to 15 kg max to ease carrying. Double-tape every box bottom. Use carrying straps for heavy furniture: they relieve the back and speed work.

Protect furniture corners with cardboard or foam. Pack mirrors, screens, and frames in reinforced flat boxes. Also prepare landings and stairwell: remove plants, wall-hung pictures in turns, and anything fragile that could be hit during maneuvers.

5

Team and Timing: The Keys to Success

For a walk-up, the team must be larger than a standard move. Plan one extra mover per floor above the 2nd. A three-bedroom on the 4th floor typically needs 4-5 movers instead of 3.

Allow 40-70% more time than a ground-floor move. A loading that would take 2 hours at ground level can take 4-5 hours at height. Schedule the move early morning before the heat, and provide plenty of water for the team. A tired team breaks more: receiving them well is also your responsibility.

6

The Real Cost and Welcome.tn's Advantage

On the informal market, a walk-up move costs significantly more because providers charge a per-floor surcharge. Manual carrying extends the duration and requires a larger team, which is passed on to the bill.

At Welcome.tn, the formula is different: the estimate is set by property type, with no floor surcharge shown in the starting grid. Whether you're on the ground floor or the 5th floor without an elevator, the same starting estimate applies for an equivalent property (for example 699 TND for an S+1, 1,399 TND for an S+3). This transparency eliminates bad surprises. You can still make the team's job easier by clearing access, disassembling small furniture the night before, and accurately describing the layout when requesting your quote.
